UPDATE 08/12/13: NOW THAT THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION IS OVER, THE PETITION IN THIS POST IS NO LONGER BEING USED. INSTEAD WE REQUEST THAT YOU CONSIDER SIGNING AND MAILING IN THE PETITION FOUND AT THE FOLLOWING BLOGPOST: A Proposed Alternative Compact
The final documents are out, the public meetings have been held, and the commission will soon be voting to move the water compact forward to the legislature.
Looking into the details, it doesn’t take long to understand this compact is not ready for primetime and it does not provide the information necessary to make an informed decision about it.
The Flathead Irrigation Project Water Use Agreement, a very important portion of this FOREVER agreement, is unresolved at this date. Consider Judge McNeil’s decision concerning the Western Montana Water Users Association suit to enjoin the irrigation project from moving forward. He is clear and succinct about what this document represents, and calls it for what it is: an unconstitutional taking without compensation.
Given all of this, it’s stunning to see the water compact commission moving forward to ram the document through the legislature.
For these reasons, and many more too numerous to mention, we are asking people to sign a petition asking legislators to oppose this incomplete, 1200 page compact should it come to them for a vote.
Please sign a copy and mail it in. Print copies and ask your friends and neighbors to sign and return it to us as soon as possible, so it can go to Helena for the record.
NOTE: if you’re interested in organizing a group of people to go to Helena to testify, or to stand in opposition to the compact. Please contact us to coordinate efforts.
