If you’re concerned about the direction the joint board of control is headed, you have a golden opportunity to vote for change in the commissioner elections taking place right now. For far too many years, joint board elections in some districts have gone uncontested, resulting is board membership that is so out of touch with the people they represent, that they allowed project operations to move to the CME (Cooperative Management Entity) without the knowledge of their constituents. The board also continues to try to vote away irrigator’s right to defend their project water rights. Did you know that according to the Lake County elections office, there has been no contested election in the Mission district since before 1991?
Chairman Walt Schock – Mission District – Walt Schock was elected in 1986, 27 years ago. Since then, he’s faced uncontested elections. This is significant when you consider that as Chairman, Mr. Schock has actively advocated for the water use agreement, and presided over the transfer of project operations to the CME, a newly created entity that no one can quite seem to figure out who or what it’s accountable to. This new entity, currently chaired by Steve Hughes, member at large of the FJBC, is responsible for removal of non-quota water, and other punitive actions that are merely precursers of things to come, especially if the water use agreement is approved. Perhaps the time has come for Mr. Schock to retire and allow someone else to lead the board through the rough waters that lie ahead.
He is challenged in this election by Jerry Laskody.
Member at Large Steve Hughes – A while back, Mr. Hughes was voted out of his FJBC commissioner position and was promptly picked up by the board as their MEMBER AT LARGE. This allowed him to become a member of the CME board, which he currently chairs. Mr. Hughes is also an avid proponent of the water use agreement, and carries far too much power when you consider the fact that he is in a board appointed position and technically is not accountable to voting constituents.
While not up for election, this postition will be replaced by a vote of the board at their meeting on May 13, 2013.
Paul Hunsucker – Flathead District – Mr. Hunsucker has opted out of the running in this election.
Candidates for this position are Susan Lake and Shane Orien.
